Celebrate Black History Month at ChathamU with events, gatherings, educational opportunities and more! Presented by the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, JKM Library, Chatham Feminist Coalition, MFA in Creative Writing Program, Humanities Department, Chatham Activities Board, and the Chatham’s Women’s Institute, this year’s Black History Month events celebrate many aspects of a multi-faceted Black culture through the lens of artistic expression, activism, and community strength. All Month: Black History Month at the JKM Library
The library is celebrating Black History Month with both an in-library book display and a year-long virtual display. Stop by the first floor of the library to browse books written by, about, and for Black Americans, or check out the virtual display here.
Wednesday February 9: Just Films: Unapologetic—6:30pm-9pm, Coolidge 134
After two police killings, Black millennial organizers challenge a Chicago administration complicit in state violence against its Black residents. Film viewing sponsored by the Women’s Institute. Register here.
Tuesday February 15: Courageous Conversations: Race on Campus—6pm-8pm, Mellon Center
This dialogue focuses on the issue of anti-Blackness: nationally, locally, and on campus. Participants will engage in dialogue circles based on racial identity and then join for an interracial dialogue. Register on myChatham.
Wednesday February 16: Holding Space on the Page: Black History and Heritage— 12pm-1pm, Virtual
In this session, we’ll read works related to the complexities of Black history and heritage. After reading these creative pieces, we will invite you to reflect, discuss, and write. No writing experience needed! Register on myChatham.
Thursday February 17: BIPOC Family Dinner—5pm-7pm, Carriage House
Come to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Family Dinner for food and community-building! This month’s featured event is speed-friending to help you extend your Chatham BIPOC network.
Friday February 18: CAB Movie Night: King Richard—7:30pm, Eddy Theatre
Based on the true story of tennis phenomena Serena and Venus Williams, King Richard showcases their childhood and path to success as made possible by their father, Richard Williams, and his 78-page plan.
Thursday February 22: Diversity Dialogue with Gene-Leigh Ziegler—4pm-5pm, Carriage House
Gene-Leigh Ziegler (MS, LPC) is a therapist whose specializations include racial, gender, and sexual identities. In this talk, she will address the struggle minorities face to process nationwide traumas such as police brutality and violence against the transgender community. Sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Chatham Feminist Coalition.
