Five Interesting Courses to Check Out Next Term

From deep dives into the history and politics of chocolate to studios in which students develop immersive, virtual educational experiences, Chatham offers a wide range of options for students looking to deepen their understanding of their major or explore new curiosities.

ART213 – Special Topics: Sports and Visual Culture
This course will examine how professional sports have influenced, informed, and created visual culture in the past and present. Readings, videos, discussions, research, presentations, guest speakers, and writing exercises guide students through the impact and legacy sports have in shaping culture and society. Different units explore sports as an identity, a brand, or politics.
BIO129 and BIO129L – Our Fragile Earth and Our Fragile Earth Lab
In this course and its corresponding lab, students view a wide range of environmental issues from a scientific perspective. Through lectures, discussions, laboratories, guest speakers, and field trips, students learn about environmental problems while increasing their scientific knowledge and literacy.
IMM371 – Studio III: Serious Play
Students develop immersive experiences for education and professional training with augmented reality, virtual reality, and extended reality technologies. Game design, advanced experience design, and instructional design are the focus of group projects in this course. Examples of projects include simulations that teach people how to operate construction vehicles or exhibits that allow users to interact with historic photos.
FST624 – Chocolate: Politics and Pleasure
Explore the history and culture behind chocolate, including agriculture, trade, labor, justice, health, and more. Students in this course get to make chocolate and visit chocolate manufacturers. The course ends with students designing and marketing a sustainable chocolate product.
FDT313 – Special Topics: From LA to Bollywood - American and Indian Cinema
This course offers an exciting journey through the cinematic landscapes of Hollywood and Bollywood, two of the world's most influential film industries. Through lectures and screenings, students learn about the birth and development of both industries; key movements and iconic filmmakers; star systems and celebrity culture; genre conventions and innovations; representation of social issues and cultural values; technical aspects of filmmaking and global reception and cross-cultural influences.
