Dr. Lisa Levenstein to Give Barbara Stone Hollander '60 Lecture

Created in memory of Barbara Stone Hollander ‘60, the annual Barbara Stone Hollander ‘60 Lecture Series honors Barbara Stone Hollander's commitment to leadership in women’s rights activism. Acting as the signature event for the Women’s and Gender Studies program, the series invites women who are leaders in their fields to Chatham to meet with students and lecture on their topics of expertise.

Dr. Lisa Levenstein

This year’s lecture will be given by Dr. Lisa Levenstein. Dr. Lisa Levenstein is director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program and professor of History at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. A historian of feminism who specializes in twentieth-century US women’s and gender history, Dr. Levenstein will be lecturing on her newest book, “They Didn’t See Us Coming: The Hidden History of Feminism in the Nineties.”

“She goes looking for feminism in some really interesting places,” says Dr. Jessie Ramey, director of the Chatham University Women’s Institute and Associate Professor of women's and gender studies. “Her book makes a great argument on how contemporary feminist movements really come out of what happened in the nineties.”

Students from Dr. Ramey’s course “Gendered Resistance, Riots, and Rebellions,” a new course being taught this fall, have been studying Dr. Levenstein’s book and will be attending the lecture to gain deeper insight into her research.

“Scholars like Dr. Levenstein are helping us understand different ways of leadership that don’t ascribe to traditional masculine roles. She’s centering the voices of people who are typically left out of the conversations, and helping us think about how women lead from the margins.”

Along with the lecture is the official awarding of the Barbara Stone Hollander ’60 Student Leadership Award. Created in memory of Barbara Stone Hollander to recognize her life-long commitment to providing opportunities for women to assume significant leadership roles, the awards funds a practical experience in leadership development to its recipients. This year’s recipient is Yukta Rana ‘22.

Hosted by the Chatham University Women’s Institute, the lecture will be held virtually via Zoom on Thursday, September 23 from 6:30-7:30 pm. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required to receive the Zoom link. More information and contact information can be found by visiting our events webpage.
