Three Chatham students have been awarded prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for their summer 2024 study abroad programs. The Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. The three student awardees are:
Kira Davis ‘26, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Data Science Analytics, will study with CEA CAPA in Grenoble, France, and participate in an internship.
Haileigh Stephens ‘24, who earned her Bachelor of Science in Sustainability ’24, will study at the Institute for Central American Development Studies (ICADS) in Costa Rica and participate in an internship.
Rhiannon Yates ‘24, who earned her Bachelor of Arts in Criminology, will study at Freie University in Berlin, Germany.
To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must receive a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will receive a Pell Grant during their study abroad program or internship.
The Gilman Scholarship was awarded to approximately 1,700 American undergraduate students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico who applied in the October 2023 cycle. On average, 70 percent of Gilman recipients self-identify as racial or ethnic minorities, 60 percent are from rural areas and small towns across America, and half are first-generation college or university students. All are Pell Grant recipients. The Gilman Scholarship contributes to the Department’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts to engage the American people in foreign policy.
