The NEW Leadership program on June 2 – 7 aims to expand the participation of women in politics.

The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics (PCWP) at Chatham University will host the National Education for Women’s (NEW) Leadership™ Pennsylvania annual event from June 2 to 7, 2024.

Held each summer on Chatham’s Shadyside Campus, this weeklong intensive institute for women college students focuses on the role of women in politics and policymaking in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This year’s program will bring 36 students from 22 colleges and universities across Pennsylvania to participate in NEW Leadership.

Ashleigh Deemer ‘05, the deputy director of PennEnvironment, will be the practitioner-in-residence, and Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato will be the keynote speaker at the Women in Leadership Dinner on June 5.

This year’s NEW Leadership program was supported by a grant from the EQT Foundation, which identifies and supports the efforts of the region to produce an abundant and well-trained workforce, create a diverse and economically viable business climate, and maintain an environmentally safe and stable infrastructure. The program is also generously supported by Chatham University alum Judy Papernick’79.

“For the past 12 years, the EQT Foundation has thoroughly enjoyed our partnership with the Pennsylvania Center for Women in Politics by providing underwriting support for the NEW Leadership program, “said Ellen Rossi, President of the EQT Foundation. “We are deeply committed to ensuring that women’s voices are part of the continuing conversation in any political circle and have been impressed over the years with the talent and commitment these young women show to being changemakers in our communities.”

About the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University
The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics (PCWP) at Chatham University is a non–partisan center devoted to fostering women’s public leadership through education, empowerment, and action. The first to focus on women’s political involvement in Pennsylvania, the PCWP integrates disciplinary knowledge, civic education, and coalition building while examining the intersection of women and public policy. The Center conducts candidate and advocacy trainings, offers educational programs in applied politics, and provides timely analysis on women’s issues. The Center is also home to the University’s membership in Project Pericles – a select group of liberal arts colleges and universities that have made institutional commitments to promoting participatory citizenship and social responsibility.
