Plan Your Semester Overseas at This Week’s Study Abroad Fair
On Wednesday, Chatham University students can see a preview of the study abroad opportunities that await them: An internship on the island nation of Cyprus. A mini-semester in Taiwan. A Cold War-era university in Germany’s largest city. These destinations and more are among the international experiences available at the Study Abroad Fair.
Karin Chipman, Chatham’s study abroad coordinator, recently spoke to Pulse@ChathamU to detail where students can study abroad and how the Office of International Affairs can help them get there.
What are some upcoming study abroad programs that stand out?
Wednesday, Sept. 20
11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Mellon Board Room
Upcoming study abroad opportunities include:
Costa Rica
Cyprus
Germany
Japan
South Korea
Taiwan
Chatham undergraduate students can participate in a variety of international programs. Some exciting options include semester-long exchange programs in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Students study a variety of subjects in English and take culture and language courses to aid their experience abroad. For exchange programs, students pay tuition to Chatham, and are eligible to use their Chatham merit scholarships, making these an affordable option for many students. Tunghai University, Chatham’s exchange partner in Taiwan, also offers an exciting and affordable summer mini-semester program.
Other exciting opportunities include partner programs in Germany, Cyprus, and Costa Rica. Students pay directly to the institution abroad and can study in summer or semester-long programs. Freie University in Berlin, Germany offers courses in German, cultural studies, and social sciences. The University of Nicosia in Cyprus has internship opportunities and classes offered in English. Another great program is Veritas University in Costa Rica, which offers courses in Spanish or English.
What is the Study Abroad Fair, and what can students expect to see there?
All students are encouraged to stop by the Study Abroad Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Mellon Board Room, where we will have information tables and presenters to help students learn about different study and intern abroad program options and scholarship opportunities.
In addition to information about Chatham exchange and partner programs, several study abroad providers will be on hand to share their program options, and answer students’ questions about eligibility, application deadlines, and what to expect abroad. We will also offer information on national study abroad scholarships and share details on how to apply for a U.S. passport. Returned study abroad students will be available to answer questions about their recent experiences abroad.
If students are interested in international programs, who should they reach out to?
The Office of International Affairs is here to help! Reach out to internationalaffairs@chatham.edu. We offer individual advising meetings and a variety of informational and social events throughout the year.
What would you say to students who are unsure about studying abroad?
Study abroad is for everyone! We are happy to help Chatham students find their fit in a Chatham exchange, partner, or provider program. There are programs of different lengths (a few weeks to an academic year), in a variety of locations, and at different price points. There are many scholarship opportunities available, and Chatham supports all undergraduates with the $1200 study abroad voucher and the opportunity to qualify for the $1800 international studies certificate voucher.
