Five Recognizable ChathamU Spots in Netflix's “The Chair” Teaser

Netflix’s upcoming series “The Chair” stars Sandra Oh as the first woman of color to serve as the fictitious Pembroke University’s English department chair. And what might you ask does this have to do with Chatham? Much of the series was filmed on location at Chatham’s Shadyside campus this past winter! Needless to say, we’re geeking out a bit. Catch the first teaser trailer here and check out all the Chatham spots we identified below (let us know if we missed any):

What’s the first thing we set our eyes on in this brief trailer? Our very own Woodland Hall in a dreamy, snow-dipped haze! In case you didn’t know, Woodland Hall is home to many of our crucial campus hubs: Cafe Rachel, the Chatham Bookstore, the Office of Student Affairs, Information Technology, Health Services, Bikeworks, and the Susan Bergman Gurrentz ‘56 Art Gallery. Not to mention, it’s an entire residence hall! Woodland Hall is a jack of all trades, or what we like to call a quintessential Chatham building.

The Quad / Braun Falk Coolidge Hall / JKM Library

Though those Adirondack chairs are far more enjoyable in the warmer months, nothing beats a snowy shot of the Chatham Quad! From this view, you can spot Braun Falk Coolidge Hall as well as our beloved Jennie King Mellon Library. If you look closely at the right corner of the photo, you’ll even see the Cafe Rachel sign.

Mellon Center steps

Sandra is on site! Catch award-winning actress, Sandra Oh as Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, Department Chair of English. Here we find her running up the beloved and oft-photographed central staircase of Mellon Center. In real life, Mellon Center is home to both Chatham’s Office of the President and Anderson Dining Hall. Formerly the estate of Andrew Mellon, Mellon Center is a stunning central component of our campus, complete with cozy study nooks, a wonderfully bright sunroom, and interior architecture that has drawn many a Hogwarts comparison.

On the trek to her office, Sandra as Dr. Kim passes through one of the lesser travelled zones of Mellon Building, the second floor. Mellon’s second floor is predominantly home to administrative offices and thus, not a common destination for students. Nonetheless, we encourage you to take a peek the next time you’re passing through Mellon on the way to lunch or class—you never know who you might bump into!

Mellon Conference Room, 2nd floor
Timestamp: (0:15)

At last, Dr. Kim has arrived in her office, what some may recognize as the second floor Mellon Conference Room. This room is a popular destination for important meetings on campus and now, a sizable but fictional faculty office. We’re looking forward to watching what unfolds at the mysterious Pembroke University as Dr. Kim gets settled in…

Stay tuned for more “The Chair” content to come, and don’t miss the series premiere on August 20th!
