ICYMI — Winter Break News Roundup

Though the holiday season and onset of the new year traditionally mark a time of rest and respite, many members of the Chatham community were making waves in the press. In case you missed any of these recent in-the-news features, catch our link round-up below for highlights from across the Chatham community:

Assistant Professor of Biology, Dr. Kevin Hatala’s research featured in Smithsonian Magazine

Chatham University’s Kevin Hatala and colleagues analyzed the largest fossil footprint assemblage in Africa. Sometime between 6,000 and 19,000 years ago, a group of modern humans walked through a mudflow in the shadow of Tanzania’s Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The 408 footprints left behind by 17 individuals help us to understand not only the heights and weights of the footprint-makers, but using statistical analysis based on a large data set of modern human feet, the team determined that the walking group probably consisted of 14 female and 2 male individuals.

Nancy Foley was almost 51 when she left her job as a physical therapist to start her own practice. She had been working in the field for 25 years, but now she wanted to do things differently. ‘In your career, you keep climbing the rungs of the ladder, and as you climb you get away from the thing you originally enjoyed doing and were inspired by,’ said Ms. Foley, now 55, with a business in Point Breeze. ‘It came from a desire to get back to my roots.’

Physical Therapy alumna, Nancy Foley and Director of the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship, Anne Schlicht both discuss the phenomenon of ‘encore entrepreneurs,’ a term for those who opt to start businesses in the latter half of their career.

Dean of the Falk School of Sustainability Lou Leonard co-authored op-ed on the U.S. government’s climate strategy for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A national climate strategy should include the kind of public-private collaboration that led to the rapid production of COVID-19 vaccines: Warp Speed to Net-Zero Climate Pollution. The seeds of such collaboration exist. Microsoft, which became carbon neutral (or net-zero) in 2012, recently announced that it would remove the equivalent of all greenhouse gases emitted in its history.

People want to understand how we can change the things that are happening in our communities. It starts with one child at a time, one person at a time, and providing the love and support that’s necessary.

DNP Alumna, Kathi Elliot told Pittsburgh Magazine in her profile. Lynn Belice, DNP ‘13 was selected as one of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Excellence in Nursing Honorable Mentions.

Alumna Sarah Jugovic’s charity work with the Pittsburgh Pirates featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

We asked for little descriptions on each of the families, just to get to know them and personalize their gifts a little bit. We didn’t want to make things generic. We wanted to make it purposeful. This has been a hard year for everyone. We wanted to spread some holiday cheer at a time when, more than ever, we all could use it.
