7 COVID-Safe Things to Do this Winter

As we come into the heart of winter here at Chatham, you may be asking yourself—what is there to do? Check out seven things you can do this winter to safely stay entertained.

Learn a lost skill

Learning a new skill is a great way to have fun and sharpen your mind. With the start of quarantine last March, the world took up baking breads, learning new dances, and plant parenting. In the spirit of this resurgence of hobbies, here are a few fun forgotten skills and hobbies to try out:

-Scarf Knitting

-Canning and food preservation

-Letter writing, calligraphy, and personalized stationary making

-Basket weaving

-Bird watching

-Chess

Visit a museum

Here in Pittsburgh, we have multiple museums that are running safety during the time of COVID-19. Book a time and head to the North Shore to study the artwork of Andy Warhol. Spend an afternoon taking a virtual tour of the beauty of The Frick mansion. Or get your fill of science and art at the Carnegie Museums in Oakland. Make sure to bring your mask and Chatham ID; students get in free! You can also enjoy their exhibits virtually from the comforts of your couch.

Get active in new ways

While it can be hard to be active in the winter months, exercise is crucial to keeping your body healthy and serotonin levels up. Kickboxing, jumping rope, yoga, cycling, and stair stepping can all be done from your home. Or you can bundle up and take a run or hike on the trails at Schenley or Frick Park.

Be a true Yinzer

While some of our most beloved Pittsburgh traditions are looking different this year, there are still plenty of classically Pittsburgh things to do.

-Stream the upcoming Pirates games.

-Take some delicious pierogies home from Pierogies Plus or learn to make your own.

-Ride the Dusquesne incline, free with a Chatham student ID, and take in the sights of the city.

-Watch some of your favorite Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood episodes and learn more about the history of the show.

Watch something new

Although we’ve all been streaming Netflix more than ever these past few months, there are still plenty of hidden gems to find. Get out the popcorn and watch a movie you’ve never seen before (this random movie picker is a huge help) or join CAB for their cinema series where they’ll be showing two films each month for free. First up is Tenet, starring Robert Pattinson!

Take on takeout

When all else fails, eat! Whether you’re a fan of sweets, burgers, sushi, or sandwiches with fries on top, there’s a place for you! Check out these guides to the best spots in Pittsburgh to eat local. Parkhurst at Chatham is also offering more take-out options than ever before, too!

We hope these tips help you weather the cold! Be sure to check MyChatham often for events, and subscribe to the Screaming Squirrel so you’re always up to date.
