The Long Legacy of Chatham's Poets

Everyone knows a variation of the classic poem, “roses are red, violets are blue…”, but did you know that one of America’s greatest poets, Robert Frost, visited Chatham? In the winter of 1955, Frost came and spoke to students in the Campbell Memorial Chapel.

In fact, Chatham’s literary magazine, The Minor Bird, is named after his poem entitled, A Minor Bird. Founded in 1929, The Minor Bird has published students’ poetry, prose, and art for 91 years! We’re celebrating this long legacy (and getting prepared for a cozy reading season) with select pieces from Chatham poets of past and present. Check them out below; you may be surprised to find just how alike these Chatham creatives are.

A huge thank you goes out to the Chatham Archives and The Minor Bird for these pieces! Keep your eyes peeled for the newest edition of The Minor Bird coming Spring 2021! In the meantime, enjoy this poem that shows just how alike students of the past and present are.
