Student Profile: Wyatt Cory

During my first year at Chatham, I (Abigail Kneuss ‘23) have noticed that so many interesting people attend Chatham, and our sense of community is strong, even during hard times. In an effort to showcase just a few of these great people, I’ll be doing a series of student interviews in the coming weeks. These highlights are for students, about students, and by students. This week I am featuring Wyatt Cory ‘23.

I first met Wyatt in my Communications course last fall and we got to know each other better through our work on the Communiqué. Wyatt is a master of all trades. He is a goalie for the Men’s Soccer team, a lover of music, and a writer. We recently caught up on his summer plans and quarantine projects.

Wyatt Cory ‘23

Major: Communications, Journalism

Hometown: Little Compton, RI

Q: What drew you to Chatham?

A: The second I showed interest in Chatham, they showed interest in me. The admissions process was super personal and everyone else I have spoken to has had a similar experience. I wasn’t even enrolled in the school yet and it felt like I was already there. Then I found out they were starting a men’s soccer team, and I was hooked. I only applied to one other college as a fallback plan; I knew Chatham was the school for me from the start.

Q: Why did you major in Journalism?

A: Both of my parents are in education, but I’ve always known that it wasn’t for me. I actually hated writing until I got to high school. It’s hard for me because I’m dyslexic, but I discovered that I can develop a writing style that I like when I’m passionate about the subject. For me, that subject is music. Music has always been a constant in my life and I love to talk about it. That’s why I want to be a music journalist. I also have a podcast where I talk about it too.

Q: Can you tell me more about your podcast?

A: So in high school, we had to do a senior project and I started a podcast where I would make a playlist for every episode and then go in depth about every song on it. It was cool to talk about what I loved so much, but it was challenging. I haven’t worked on that in about a year but I also took a podcasting class this last semester and me and my friend Jake (pictured beside), made a podcast together for our final and I got to refine my skills a lot. It was a fun class!

Q: What have you been up to since leaving campus?

A: In the beginning, I didn’t do much besides schoolwork because it was super gloomy here in Rhode Island. But, I did work on this project where I reached out to some of my favorite bands and musicians and asked to interview them for an article. A lot of them responded because everyone had free time! It was a really cool experience and I got to put the skills I had learned in my journalism classes to work. Now that it’s warm out, I’ve been working at a restaurant here, reading a lot of Stephen King, and riding my bike listening to music. I like to go to the ocean a lot, it’s only a 10-minute bike ride from my house.

Q: What are you listening to right now?

A: The Garden is a really high energy rock band from Orange County, California and they’re perfect for summertime bike rides. Beach Fossils is my all-time favorite band. They’re an indie rock band from NYC. I tried to interview them for the piece, but they didn’t respond. It’s my dream to interview them someday though.

Q: Favorite memory from your first year?

A: Our first ever home game for soccer was a big deal. We were kind of the underdogs since it was our first year playing as a team. We had only known each other for a couple of weeks and we really wanted to win. I got to start for the game and I was really focused and nervous but my new friends I had made at Chatham came to support me and it was the best feeling. They yelled for me so loud that my parents watching the broadcast of the game heard them. I had only known them a couple of weeks, but it already felt like they supported me as much as my friends from home. We played well that game and I had some big saves and I think they were part of the reason I did.

Q: What are you looking forward to the most in the fall?

A: I’m looking forward to being back on campus a lot. My fall semester classes are journalism heavy and I’m excited to continue my media journalism efforts. This will be our second season for soccer, and hopefully, we will be able to have a season because I think we’ll be even better and closer this year. I’m mostly excited to be back in Pittsburgh and be back in the city atmosphere.
