Student Profile: Liam Rubright

During my first year at Chatham, I (Abigail Kneuss ‘23) have noticed that so many interesting people attend Chatham, and our sense of community is strong, even during hard times. In an effort to showcase just a few of these great people, I’ll be doing a series of student interviews in the coming weeks. These highlights are for students, about students, and by students. This week I am featuring Liam Rubright ‘20.

As a fellow Communications major and student employee working in the Office of Marketing and Communications together, I have gotten to know Liam well this past year at Chatham. I have found that he is a dedicated person in all that he does whether it be school, work, hockey, or his involvement on campus. We recently chatted about what he’s been up to since we left campus and his plans for after his last semester this fall.

Liam Rubright ‘20

Major: Communications and Arts Management

Hometown: West Mifflin, PA

Q: So Liam why did you choose Chatham?

For me, it was all about the location and class sizes and neither of these aspects have disappointed. Chatham has kept the small classroom sizes even as the university has expanded at my time here. I value small class sizes because I get to actually interact with my peers and professors in the classroom. Not only is the location perfect in Pittsburgh which I love, but the campus is beautiful too. I love all of the old architecture— it makes the learning space even better.

Q: What have you gotten involved with at your time here?

I’m the social media manager for the Men’s Ice Hockey team which is a lot of fun. I’m also part of the Chatham Masculinities Project which engages male-identifying students in regular dialogue sessions about the role we can play in creating change around violence. I am also a student worker in the Office of Marketing and Communications and was previously a student ambassador for Admissions.

Q: Outside of classes what do you enjoy doing?

I love all things hockey! I actually got to intern with the Pittsburgh Penguins this past semester which was great and I’ve been to 6 different NHL arenas in the past year. I also love cooking, video games, and recently, hiking. I’ve really gotten into it during this quarantine, it’s good to get fresh air.

Q: Can you tell me more about your internship?

A: Sure! So I worked for the Penguins radio network. Part of my job was helping with social media management. The other part of my job was helping the producer set up on-site before home games. After the game, I would go into the locker rooms to get player soundbites so I got to meet a lot of the players. One time, I picked up garbage with Sidney Crosby who is my childhood hero. Even though it sounds kind of silly, that was my best memory from the internship.

Q: Favorite things at Chatham?

A: My favorite spot is the pond, it’s super calming when classes get stressful. My favorite professor is a tie between Dr. Boyd and Professor Pierson. I just can’t choose, they’re both so great and have helped me out a lot along the way.

Q: What do you want to do after graduation this fall?

A: I’m still trying to figure it out, but my dream job is to be in sports management. I’ve learned a lot about how to be an effective manager in my Arts Management courses and this field would allow me to fuse my love for sports and my education together. Additionally, I’m looking into sports marketing. My job on-campus has made me realize I love marketing and looking into why people do what they do and buy what they buy. The research that goes into it is really interesting.

Q: Any advice to incoming first-years?

It’s okay to not know what you’re going to do yet! Don’t be afraid to try new things at college because it’s the time to figure out who you are and what kind of person you want to be. New opportunities will be available to you, make sure to take them! It’s really all about the process of learning not only about your field of study but about yourself.
