Musical Melodies: Performances from Chatham's Music Students

During this isolated time, music can play a crucial role in lifting our spirits and allowing for self-expression. In light of this, the Chatham Music Department asked students to share virtual performances for the Spring 2020 Recital and the music program newsletter, where this content originally appeared. In a time when many are struggling, we hope these performances from talented students will help you feel connected to the Chatham community. Please enjoy a sampling of student performances below—

Kaitlyn Volk performing Op. 71, No. 3, "Little Troll" by Edvard Grieg.

Kaitlyn Volk ‘23, Piano

"During this time, it has been difficult to make music. I have definitely had more time to practice, but it’s not the same. In the music hall, it was so enjoyable to listen to all the different music when I walked through it... Because music is so different for me now, I realize I cannot take it for granted. I need to especially appreciate those moments when I get to hear others making music and when I get to share with others as well.”

Sarah Krastman performing "Ouvre Ton Coeur" by Georges Bizet.

Sarah Krastman ‘22, Soprano

"I am so grateful to have music as a source of inspiration and light during these difficult times. Music has a unique way of bringing people together by touching the heart and nourishing the soul. Many pieces we love to listen to are remembered because they speak within ourselves and bring out human emotion and experience through shared song.”

Katie Hetz performing “Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109: I” by Ludwig van Beethoven

Katie Hetz ‘20, Piano

“Music, like flowers, blooms in the most unlikely of places. Unlike flowers, it also blooms amid some of the worst conditions: frosts, floods, tornadoes, wars, pandemics...what can’t it stand up to? As we perform from our bedrooms, our dining rooms, or places outside our homes for some of us, we are expressing music's incredible ability to traverse boundaries.”
