How to Have a Safely Spooky Halloween

It’s safe to say that like most of 2020 thus far, Halloween is going to look and feel different this year. To put it lightly: that really bites. 🧛🏽‍♂️ Though the pandemic has forced us to reconfigure many of the traditional elements of Halloween fun—party-hopping, punch bowls, and costumes that brave the elements–fear and creativity are still very much on the table. So join us as we count down some safe but scary ways to make the most of Halloween 2020, be that in small groups, digital spaces, or the spirit realm.

Enjoy these photos of Chatham Halloweens past & keep your fingers crossed & clean in hopes for next year…

MAKE A MIXTAPE

Okay so hear us out…Halloween music comes but once a year and it’s worth the wait. The Monster Mash? ✅ Thriller? ✅ Ghostbusters? ✅ Consider making a shared Halloween playlist that you and all your friends can contribute to, then spend the night dancing together (in spirit)!

HOST A Zoom pumpkin carving 🎃

Step 1: Acquire a pumpkin and pumpkin carving kit
Step 2: Schedule a Zoom hang with your pals
Step 3: Share some carving inspiration a la Good Housekeeping and Delish
Step 4: Put on that Halloween playlist and get to carving
Step 5: Share your jack-o-lantern with the class

Host a small & spooky gathering

Zoom fatigue is scarier than half of the stuff we’re going to put on this list, so we get it. Consider gathering a small group of masked, trusted pals for a safe Halloween night-in and try playing one of these scary games suggested by Pittsburgh City Paper. Orrrr if you’re a bit of a scaredy cat, try making some of these fun and delightful Halloween recipes from the Food Network, featuring both sweet & savory eats.

Scare yourself

If you feel safest doing Halloween solo this year, consider getting totally freaked out from a totally safe space—your dorm room. We recommend Jezebel’s annual Scary Story Contest for dozens of true and terrifying reader-submitted stories. And if you’re looking for horror movie scares, check out this Harper’s Bazaar list of the Scariest Horror Movies of All Time. Though horror is deeply subjective, this might be a good place to start.

Use Masks to Your advantage

Unlike most holidays, masks are already conveniently built into the DNA of Halloween, so find creative ways to incorporate this safety measure into your costume. Wherever you go, whatever you do, be sure to keep yourself and others safe by following these socially distant rules:

—Wear a mask around others (even when outside)
—Maintain 6 feet or more distance from individuals (and in groups)
—Avoid large gatherings and parties
—Be aware of the “15-minute window” in your interactions
—Practice COVID safety both on-campus and off

Happy Halloween, Cougs! Stay safe, spooky, & socially distant! 👻😷☠️
