Student Profile: Zach Mayan

Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of the Chatham experience is the community. In such unprecedented times, I (Abigail Kneuss ‘23), have become increasingly grateful for this community and its members. In an effort to showcase just a few of these great people, I’ll be doing a series of student interviews in the coming weeks. These highlights are for students, about students, and by students. This week features Zach Mayan ‘23.

As President of the Class of 2023, a Psychology and Marketing double-major, and a member of the Men’s Lacrosse Team, Zach stays busy. Learn more about him, his plans for the future, and his favorite parts of his college experience below!

Zach Mayan ‘23

Major: Psychology and Marketing

Hometown: Gilbertsville, PA

Q: What drew you to your majors?

A: I have always felt that two strengths of mine are talking to people and understanding them. The way I see it, I can either use this to help people with Psychology or sell things to people with Marketing. I’m still deciding which route I want to go, but I either want to be a Clinical Psychologist or work in marketing for a corporation.

Q: What initiatives are in the works at CSG?

A: Right now we’ve got a long-term and short-term goal we are working towards. Short-term, we’re trying to make the Harvest Dinner as normal as possible while remaining safe. We’re looking into doing it outside while still following socially-distanced guidelines. It’s a memorable event at Chatham where you get to laugh and share a meal with friends and I think it’s really important that we still hold it. Long-term, we are working on adding a module to the SDE class that every First-Year student has to take that teaches Diversity & Inclusion.

Q:

Why do you feel it’s important to follow COVID procedures at Chatham?

A: Personally, I see it as a social and moral responsibility. At this point, it’s common courtesy for others, the same way that you would sneeze into your arm. I feel it’s my duty to protect my fellow citizens and prevent a disease that can and has had horrible outcomes from spreading. It’s also important to me that lacrosse can have a season this year. I’m really happy with how serious our team has been taking it. We’ve been following all procedures and a handful of guys on the team get sample tested every week.

Q: Outside of your studies, what do you enjoy doing?

A: I’m trying to start a section of Dungeons and Dragons with the lacrosse team. It’s something we can do socially-distanced and it’s something I’ve always enjoyed. Besides that, I enjoy working out as a good way to get rid of pent-up energy and feel better about myself.

Q: What has been the best part of college thus far?

A: The city. I come from a suburban and rural area so it’s been a big change, but a good one. It’s nice to be surrounded by different people with different perspectives; it challenges me. I also like sightseeing in the city. My favorite spot in Pittsburgh these days is Color Park in the Southside. It used to be a public park, but now it’s all graffitied with a nice view of the water and Downtown. Although it’s a little cliché, I also love the view from Mt. Washington.
