Pennsylvania Center for Women & Politics Hosts NEW Leadership Annual Program

The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics (PCWP) at Chatham University hosted the National Education for Women’s (NEW) Leadership™ Pennsylvania annual event on June 5-9, 2022.  This weeklong intensive institute for women college students focused on the role of women in politics and policy making in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and brought 31 students from 16 different colleges and universities across Pennsylvania to the Chatham University campus. Practitioner-in-Residence, Nancy Bocskor, led several networking sessions, panel discussions and presentations around women’s leadership. The event focused on ways to make a difference and the path to public service with keynote addresses by Leigh Chapman, Acting Secretary of the Commonwealth, and Kimberly Peeler-Allen, co-chair of the HHFA Political Action Committee.

2022 Attendee Perspectives:

The benefits of NEW Leadership were the ability to learn all the different career choices, network, and meet other women with the same dreams and aspirations. It’s a very rewarding experience and one of the biggest takeaways I gained is that it’s okay to not have everything figured out right this moment, but NEW Leadership did confirm to me I’m on the right track.
— Abigail DiLoreto

I think that the people who NEW Leadership introduced you to is the most beneficial part of the experience. The people they bring genuinely want to help you succeed and that offer of a helping hand comes few and far between in this world. So, knowing that you both have a connection to NEW Leadership and that you are a part of this small (but mighty) community is very empowering.
— Shaelah Pepperman

I loved my NEW Leadership PA experience. I loved how all the speakers were connected to politics in different ways from professors, political consultants, environmental advocacy groups, working for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and even being elected officials. The people that I met shared their experience and advice with me and were invested in my future plans and success too which was reassuring and makes the job search feel less overwhelming.
— Lalah Willams

This year’s NEW Leadership program was supported by a grant from the EQT Foundation, which identifies and supports the efforts of the region to produce an abundant and well-trained workforce, create a diverse and economically viable business climate, and maintain an environmentally safe and stable infrastructure and the Hillman Foundation, which strives to improve the quality of life in the Pittsburgh region through strategic grantmaking focused on economic development, health, education, human services, the arts, and the environment

About the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University
The Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics (PCWP) at Chatham University is a non–partisan center devoted to fostering women’s public leadership through education, empowerment, and action. The first to focus on women’s political involvement in Pennsylvania, the PCWP integrates disciplinary knowledge, civic education, and coalition building while examining the intersection of women and public policy. The Center conducts candidate and advocacy trainings, offers educational programs in applied politics, and provides timely analysis on women’s issues. The Center is also home to the University’s membership in Project Pericles – a select group of liberal arts colleges and universities that have made institutional commitments to promoting participatory citizenship and social responsibility.

The Pennsylvania Center for Women, Politics, and Public Policy was established in 1998 through the generosity of the Hillman Foundation, Inc. and the Maurice Falk Medical Foundation. It was then re-launched and endowed in 2003, by the Hillman Foundation. More information is available at www.chatham.edu/pcwp.
