President Finegold's Statement on the January 6 Violence in DC
Dear Chatham Community,
Like most of you, Sue, Charlotte and I watched yesterday’s events in our nation’s capital with disbelief and horror.
I grew up believing that however imperfect, one thing that the U.S. stood for around the world was democracy. It’s hard to imagine anything more dramatic to shatter that perception.
I’m grateful that the members of the Senate and House of Representatives came back to the Capitol to certify the results of the Presidential election and to reaffirm the importance of our Constitution and a peaceful transfer of power, and wrote to DC Mayor Muriel Bowser ‘94 as events unfolded to offer the support of the Chatham community.
We can only hope that yesterday will serve as the shock that our nation and elected representatives need on how fragile our democracy can be if we don’t live by and respect its core principles, and serve as a call to come together to address the many pressing challenges we face and begin healing the deep divisions in our society.
We will be sharing additional information, resources and opportunities for dialogue within our community over the coming days. Until then, please stay safe, and take care of yourselves and each other.
Together,
David Finegold
President
