Chatham University recognized for high student voting engagement and participation
Chatham University has been recognized by the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge (ALL IN) as a 2022 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting. This program recognizes institutions that worked to increase nonpartisan student voter registration, education and turnout and ensure equitable access to the polls for their campus community. Chatham was one of just under 400 colleges across the country recognized for these efforts.
The 2022 midterm election represented the second highest youth voter turnout rate for a midterm election in the past 30 years, and young people were instrumental in deciding the outcomes of key races in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin.
“The research is clear: colleges and universities that make intentional efforts to increase nonpartisan democratic engagement have higher campus voter registration and voter turnout rates. Despite ongoing obstacles, these campuses have remained dedicated in their commitment to ensuring that their students are informed and confident voters,” said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
As part of the award program, Chatham met four core requirements:
Participated in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
Shared a 2020 National Study of Learning Voting and Engagement (NSLVE) Report with campus voting data with ALL IN.
Developed and submitted a 2022 democratic engagement action plan with ALL IN.
Is a current signatory to ALL IN’s Higher Education Presidents’ Commitment to Full Student Voter Participation.
The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge empowers colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. Campuses that join the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge complete a set of action items, with the support of ALL IN Challenge staff, to institutionalize nonpartisan civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation on their campus. The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge currently engages over 9 million students from more than 960 institutions in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
