Chatham recognized as Tree Campus USA for 11th year in a row
For the eleventh year in a row, Chatham University has received the Tree Campus USA recognition for the commitment shown by the University for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.
In order to receive this distinction, Chatham has met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.
Chatham’s Shadyside Campus, one of the most idyllic locations in the City of Pittsburgh, dates to 1869 and includes elements of the original Andrew Mellon estate. The campus encompasses a 32-acre arboretum, featuring 115 different varieties of species. The Arboretum provides an outdoor classroom, as well as an inviting place to stroll and to meditate. Currently, there are only 411 campuses across the United States with this recognition. More information about the program is available at treecampushighered.org.
