Chatham ranked as a best college and top performer for social mobility
Chatham University has once again been ranked as a Best College by U.S. News & World Report for the 2021 Best College rankings. This year, Chatham ranked in the top half of the ranked schools in the National Universities category.
In addition, Chatham was recognized through other rankings, including:
A Best Value School
A Top Performer on Social Mobility
For social mobility, Chatham was ranked highest among National Universities in Pennsylvania for the 2021 U.S. News Social Mobility Index for higher education, which is based on the percentage of Pell-eligible students and the six-year graduation rate for these students.
“Throughout our 152-year history Chatham has been a leader in broadening access to higher education,” said Chatham President David Finegold. “We created the first opportunity for women in the Pittsburgh region to get a degree back in 1869. In the 1970s, our Gateway Program was an early-mover in creating a pathway for adult women to return to college to get a degree. And today, we’re proud to be recognized as a leader in the state for helping Pell-eligible students graduate with their degree."
“There is often a misperception that small private colleges and universities like Chatham are an expensive option,” said Tom Foley, President of the Association for Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP). “In fact, the 93 institutions that make up AICUP educate 44% of all Pell-eligible bachelor's degree students in the state and 53% of all students of color at both graduate and undergraduate level.”
“And while the media focuses on the rising costs of higher education, the average tuition paid by students at AICUP schools, just $12,983 in 2018-19, was less than it was 5 years earlier, in contrast to the tuition increases at Pennsylvania’s public universities that receive a much larger subsidy from the state,” continued Foley.
