Falk School professor partners with Greater Washington County Food Bank to support veterans

Chatham University’s Falk School of Sustainability & Environment Aquatic Laboratory Director, Dr. Roy Weitzell, will partner with the Greater Washington County Food Bank (GWCFB) to design and develop a series of workshops for veterans. Funded as part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Block Grant Program awarded to the GWCFB, the workshops will teach veterans how to raise lettuce and other specialty crops using hydroponics and aquaponics. The workshops will be held at the Food Bank’s training center and provide a unique, hands-on learning experience for veterans.

The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program’s purpose is to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops, such as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and more. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that $72.4 million was awarded through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program authorized by the 2018 Farm Bill, to support farmers growing specialty crops. For more information, visit https://www.ams.usda.gov/services/grants/scbgp.

The mission of Greater Washington County Food Bank is to form lasting solutions to hunger insecurity through effective food distribution systems; to educate and empower the needy in seeking positive lifestyle changes; and, to create awareness through individual and community partnerships.
