Award-Winning Artist Spends Week As Scholar-In-Residence

PITTSBURGHVanessa German, American Academy of Arts and Letters Jacob Lawrence Award winner, will be writing, creating, and performing at Chatham University as the Women’s Institute’s Scholar in Residence. German will not only be informing and educating Chatham University students, but will also be participating in three events to be held on Chatham University’s Shadyside Campus. All events are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, March 21st, following a JustFilms screening of “The Revival: Women and the Word” at 6:30 p.m. in the Eddy Theater, German will be performing for the public. The next morning at 10:00 a.m. in Buhl Hall, German will be giving a lecture on her time at Standing Rock documenting water protectors. An artist talk and reception will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23rd at the Woodland Art Gallery, where German will present on the piece she has created during the week. Following her talk, Chatham students will also share spoken word pieces German has mentored them on during her time on campus.


About Vanessa German

Based in Pittsburgh, German has been using her talents to give back to the community in several ways. As a spoken word artist, poet, sculptor, painter, writer, and activist, German founded Love Front Porch and the ARThouse which focus on community art programs for children in Homewood. In 2017, she received a prestigious $50,000 United States Artists Fellowship.

About the Scholar in Residence  Program

Each year, the Women's Institute hosts a Scholar in Residence for a week or more on campus bringing outstanding national women leaders to work closely with students. The Scholar in Residence gives guest lectures in classes, advises and mentors small groups of students, and also gives a public lecture.
